We absolutely love having Solar on our home. With Spot Power and their two-tiered electricity rates, higher in summer and lower in winter, we have an estimated break-even and return on investment after 7 years. I’ve been tracking the numbers on a spreadsheet, and after the first two full years of Solar, we have paid $124.50 in Electricity and have sold back almost $3900 in credits.
Being able to run high-drawing appliances (dryer, dishwasher, AC) while the sun is up and shining and using the free energy has been financially beneficial. What should I look for in a solar installer?
Selecting a local provider who provides a turnkey installation with experience is highly recommended. We also recommend looking at the company’s warranties before making a purchase. A longer, more comprehensive warranty will make sure you get the most out of your system.
Will solar power work for me?
How efficient a solar array is depends on your home’s exposure to sunlight. That can include things like the direction of your home and whether there’s anything between it and the sky. The size of your roof and your power consumption also dictate how large of a system you can get approved to install. What’s the lifespan on a solar energy system?
Solar panels generally degrade over time, but function at, or near, 100% for about 25 years or longer. After that, they still function, but at a somewhat diminished rate. However, inverters are expected to last at least 25 years and have warranties that reflect that – though some have lasted longer.
Do I need to clean/maintain my solar panels?
Solar panels can get dirty but wind and snow run-off takes care of the worst of the grime. Though some of our clients wipe their panels down seasonally, we don’t recommend it as the small gain in efficiency is not worth the risk.
Will snow accumulation affect the efficiency of my solar panels?
In Southern Alberta, the sun is usually enough to keep solar panels clear of snow, especially as solar panels are dark and designed to catch the sun. However, if it is safe to do so and there is a lot of snow, clearing it can optimize the performance of your solar panels.

How much space do I need to install a solar system?

Can it be tied into the grid?
Yes. For all our projects we tie our solar panels back into the grid so that when your solar array is creating more energy than your home can use, that excess energy is making you money.
Is solar allowed in Lethbridge?
Yes. Lethbridge has great solar potential and both the local and provincial governments are on board with the move to solar. However, solar installation does require a permit and requires professional installation to qualify for rebates.
