Energy Smart’s Lethbridge Office Achieves 100% Net Zero Status

Energy Smart Canada is proud to announce that its office in Lethbridge has achieved 100% net zero status, utilizing several renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies to create a building that produces more overall energy than it consumes.

Achieving a net zero office has been a long-standing goal for Energy Smart owner Rudy Reger, who has spent more than 25 years helping Southern Albertans adopt cleaner, more efficient energy solutions. The office now represents that vision in practice, incorporating many of the technologies Energy Smart recommends to its customers.

At the heart of the building’s heating and cooling system is a geothermal ground-source heat pump, which provides efficient heating and cooling throughout the Energy Smart office with 0 natural gas. The system utilizes GeoSmart’s Net Zero heat pump, a solution designed to help buildings achieve net zero energy performance.

The Energy Smart property also features an 80kW solar system installed on the roof. The solar array generates renewable electricity to offset the energy consumed by the building, allowing the office to achieve its 100% net zero status.

Energy efficiency extends beyond the building’s energy use. All lighting throughout the office has been converted to LED, while Caroma dual-flush toilets help reduce water consumption and improve overall resource efficiency.

The commitment to efficient technology also extends to the Arctic Spas showroom located next door. Three air-source heat pumps provide heating and cooling for the showroom, with the systems capable of heating and cooling approximately 12,000 square feet.

For Rudy Reger, achieving net zero at the Energy Smart office is the realization of a personal and professional goal. He has also built a net zero home, which received the Provincial Net Zero Home Award from BILD Alberta in 2019.

“Having a net zero home was a dream of mine, and I wanted to bring that same vision into our workplace. Now, having both a net zero home and a net zero office is incredibly rewarding. It demonstrates that these technologies aren’t just concepts for the future, they’re solutions we can put into practice and benefit from today.”

The Energy Smart office serves as a working example of how renewable energy, water conservation and energy-efficient technologies can come together to significantly reduce a building’s environmental impact.

As Energy Smart Canada celebrates 25 years in business in 2026, the company is proud to continue demonstrating its commitment to helping create a more sustainable and energy-efficient future for Southern Alberta.
