    Winner in the Net Zero home category of the Alberta Bild Awards, Casa Verde is the result of decades of experience with high-efficiency appliances and sustainable building practices. Every choice in the design and build was selected to maximize energy independence, lower the home’s carbon footprint and increase Rudy and Stella’s comfort and enjoyment in the home.

    Hi, we are Rudy and Stella Reger, owners of Energy Smart. When we first built Energy Smart Canada, we wanted to build an environmentally friendly home. Previously, we had retrofitted our home with a geothermal unit and done everything we could to decrease energy usage. But, we couldn’t quite make it net zero. That all changed in 2019 when we were finally able to follow our dreams and build Casa Verde, our net zero home.

    Using the products we carry in the store, we were able to design a home that creates more energy than it uses, while creating a home that we will enjoy for years.

    • A net zero head office

    But, Rudy and Stella weren’t content with stopping there. So, in 2022, our head office was completely renovated so that it complies with net zero as well.

    We added a solar array to the building, along with geothermal heating and cooling. Then, we replaced all the appliances and energy-saving devices from our own catalogue.

    So, if you’d like to see what net zero looks and feels like, feel free to stop by the office and look around.

    The renovation included:

    • NetZero (brand) Ground Source Heat Pump for our geothermal system. This covers all our heating and cooling needs
    • An 80kW solar array on the roof covers power consumption, including the heat pump. With this, the office produces more power than it consumes.

    After the renovation, we disconnected from the gas lines as we no longer needed gas.
