Energy Smart was inspired to help a group of Grade 2 and 3 students from W.A. Day School who turned their disappointment over the vandalism of Fort Macleod’s Wilderness Park Book Walk into action, fundraising enough money to restore the Book Walk entirely.
The students recently visited the Wilderness Park on a field trip, where they discovered that many of the glass-covered podiums used for the community’s Book Walk had been heavily vandalized. The Book Walk, organized by the local library, features pages from children’s books displayed along the walking path, allowing families and children to enjoy a story while spending time outdoors.
Seeing the damage left the students understandably disappointed. Rather than simply moving on, they decided to take action and find a way to help.
The Grade 2 and 3 students organized their own fundraiser, offering face painting, temporary tattoos, and nail painting for $1 during recess throughout the week. Their initiative raised an impressive $504.20, which they donated to the library to restore the Book Walk.
The students’ efforts caught the attention of Energy Smart and several other local organizations and businesses, including the Royal Purple, Scougals, and EMCO HVAC Lethbridge. Recognizing the students’ initiative and their desire to make a positive difference in their community, the organizations agreed to match the money the students had raised.
Through the matching contributions, the students’ original $504.20 fundraiser grew to a total donation of $2,521 for the library.
The students recently presented the funds to the library with a giant novelty cheque, celebrating the success of an initiative that began with their desire to improve a space they enjoy and share with their community.
Energy Smart was proud to contribute to the students’ efforts and help amplify the impact of their fundraiser. The donation will support the library’s efforts surrounding the Wilderness Park Book Walk, helping preserve an outdoor literacy experience that brings reading, recreation, and community together.
